It is very necessary to eliminate misconceptions and to clear out any confusion related to coffee drinking so that coffee drinkers can enjoy their favorite beverage with a little peace of mind.
Coffee Facts and Myths Examined
One of the latest coffee myths to surface is one related to the idea that coffee drinkers that drink coffee that has been unfiltered during the process of coffee making actually elevate their LDL cholesterol levels. A recent study that appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition had assertions arguing that there was a correlation between unfiltered coffee and LDL level increases; but the study cannot be considered concrete evidence of the latter. In fact, the study was only conducted for a 14 day period, and is hardly long enough to solidly conclude that increases in LDL levels and heart disease are linked to unfiltered coffee drinking. Until more studies are conducted, this study cannot be considered fact and must remain a myth when considering coffee facts and myths.
In some instances, coffee can irritate one’s stomach after drinking it and this has lead to the myth that consuming coffee causes ulcers. While stomach irritation is a fact for some, in truth, there are current studies that have recently revealed that the majority of ulcers are actually caused by a particular bacterium, and ulcers have nothing to do with whether or not an individual drinks coffee. If you have an ulcer, you may want to refrain from drinking coffee just to avoid stomach irritation, but if you are ulcer free, you can relax and continue to enjoy drinking coffee without worrying that you might get an ulcer.
Many people also falsely believe that since coffee is a stimulant, it is a drink that can be readily linked to issues with the heart. Not so; like anything else, if coffee is consumed in moderate levels, there is no noted increase in issues of heart disease. A ten year study was conducted on more than 85,000 females which revealed that there were absolutely no increases in heart disease revealed in females that were consuming more than six cups of coffee a day. Further, a similar study was conducted on 45,000 men, and there were no correlations between coffee consumption and heart disease in that study either.
An interesting fact related to coffee drinking is that it actually can improve one’s memory! A study conducted in 2005 revealed that coffee drinkers have a sharper memory after drinking three cups of coffee a day. Tests revealed that brain activity actually increased after having a certain level of caffeine, and a second study conducted two years later and released in the journal Neurology argues that the increased memory one gains from drinking coffee is a long lasting effect!
